Tanning Safety / FAQ's

At Studio 7 Tanning Rooms, we place the highest importance on providing a safe, professional, and responsible tanning experience. Our focus is on helping you achieve your desired results in a carefully managed environment, where session times, skin assessments, and equipment standards are all tailored to support your skin’s wellbeing. Your safety, comfort, and confidence are at the heart of everything we do.

Professional Consultation & Skin Assessment

Every client receives a free skin consultation with our fully trained team. We assess your skin type, determine your suitability for sunbed use, and recommend appropriate session lengths and frequency. We also check for any medical or lifestyle factors that may make tanning unsuitable for you.

Your natural skin colour is determined by melanin — the pigment produced by specialised cells in the skin. When exposed to UV light, melanin production increases and gradually darkens as it rises to the surface, creating a tan. Understanding your skin type allows us to guide you safely and responsibly.

Skin Type 1 – Very light skin, often with red hair and blue eyes. UV exposure should be minimised.
Skin Type 2 – Light skin, blonde to light brown hair, light eyes. Should begin with shorter, gentle sessions.
Skin Type 3 – Darker white skin, brown hair, darker eyes. Can gradually build a deeper tan.
Skin Type 4 – Olive or light brown skin, dark hair and eyes. Typically develops a tan more easily.
Skin Type 5 – Naturally darker brown skin with dark hair and eyes. Usually tans quickly and has a higher natural melanin level.

The 0.3 Regulation Standard

All sunbeds at Studio 7 operate in line with UK and EU regulations, limiting UV output to a maximum of 0.3W/m² — commonly referred to as the “0.3 standard.”

Our beds are fitted with premium tanning and hybrid tubes and are carefully maintained to meet this regulation. A 0.3 tanning session delivers UV exposure comparable to the strength of the midday Mediterranean sun, but in a far more controlled and regulated environment.

Safe Tanning Guidelines

To ensure the safest and most effective experience, we advise:

  • Follow recommended session times – Increasing minutes too quickly can lead to burning. Always speak to a member of staff before adjusting your session length.

  • Take rest days – A minimum of 24–48 hours between sessions is required to allow your skin time to develop and recover.

  • Use appropriate tanning lotions – Only specially formulated sunbed lotions should be used to enhance results and maintain skin hydration. Standard moisturisers and SPF products are not suitable for sunbed use.

  • Always wear eye protection – We provide protective goggles free of charge to shield your eyes from UV exposure.

What You Can Expect

When tanning responsibly under professional guidance, you can expect:

  • A deeper, longer-lasting tan

  • A gradual process tailored to your individual skin type

  • Reduced risk of over-exposure when following recommended guidelines

Frequently asked questions

FAQ'S

What happens on my first visit to Studio 7?

On your first visit you will meet our friendly team.

We will ask you about your previous tanning experience and gain a few quick details from you, and discuss your tanning goals.

We will assess your skin type and your current stage of tan development, advising you on session lengths and answering any questions you may have before creating your account.

How will I know how to use your sunbed controls?

We have lay-down and stand-up tanning beds, and once we have set up your account on your initial visit you will have a personal one-on-one tour and demonstration by one of our friendly team.

The beds are very easy to control, and to keep it simple all our lay-down beds are the same premium Ergoline models and have the same operations, as do all our premium Mega-sun stand-up beds.

Operations such as controlling the cooling ventilation fans, facial tanning and safety options will all be explained...

And don't worry, we all forget... so if on your next visit you've forgotten any of the controls, our friendly team are on hand.

How does a tanning session work at Studio7?

There is no need to book sessions at Studio7, as we offer a walk-in service on all our beds and tanning sessions.

You can choose to 'pay-as-you-go' paying for your individual session minutes for an individual tanning session...

Or

You can purchase course packages (always changing) that will be stored securely on your account to be used over numerous tanning session visits.

And don't worry, our course packages have NO EXPIRY DATE on them, so once you have paid for a package it is yours until the minutes have been used up.

Are your beds cleaned and sanitised?

We take extreme pride in the cleanliness of our beds and overall environment.

A member of the Studio 7 team will clean and sanitise EVERY BED after EVERY INDIVIDUAL TANNING SESSION... ensuring that you experience the cleanest beds and the most enjoyable tanning experience possible, every time!

What are the benefits of using a sunbed?

Tanning in sunlight means the body can be subjected to uncontrolled levels of UV rays.

Depending on the time of day, month of the year, your exposure to the sun, etc... you are potentially overexposed to the suns UV rays resulting in sunburn.

A sunbed session is a controlled way to tan, giving a consistent tanning experience and avoiding burning, with benefits such as:

  • Controllable UV exposure resulting in longer lasting and even body tanning.

  • Convenience and speed of the tanning process with zero sunburn.

  • Inducing a good mental state, positive and optimistic, with increased serotonin & endorphin levels.

  • Skin hydration, firmness and elasticity - with collagen red tube tanning in all our Tanning Lounge sunbeds.

  • Synthesis of vitamin D, which helps to boost calcium in the body and improves the immune system.

How do sunbeds help with my vitamin D levels?

UV exposure is the main source of vitamin D production, which helps maintain a high  immune system, builds muscle strength, helps stave off depression and low mood, while keeping energy levels high.

From October to May it is impossible to produce vitamin D from sunshine exposure in the UK as the sun is too weak, so just a few minutes on a sunbed 2-3 times a week will enable your body to produce enough vitamin D.

What are Studio 7's hybrid collagen tubes?

All our sunbeds have hybrid collagen tanning tubes (the red tubes you will see in our sunbeds) which helps to strengthen the structure of your skin, as these tubes stimulate the production of collagen and elastin which results in maintaining superior skin hydration, firmness and elasticity, while reducing the wrinkling process and skin discoloration.

Can anyone use a sunbed?

People with any contra-indications to tanning, for example people on certain medications that may cause their skin to react to UV exposure should not use a sunbed or sunbath at all.

Under 18's are also forbidden by law from using sunbeds.

Should you have any concerns or questions our professional Tanning Lounge team will go through your specific circumstances before advising on your suitability to use a sunbed.

How many times a week can I sensibly use a sunbed?

The Studio 7 team will advise you on an individual recommendation based on your skin type and your stage of tanning.

However as a general rule tanning 2-3 times a week is perfectly fine with a minimum of 24 hours left between any 2 sessions.

How long should my tanning sessions last?

To start your tanning process it is much better to build up a base tan safely by undertaking shorter sessions more often, rather than longer sessions on an irregular basis.

With regards to what is right for you, this all depends on your individual factors. At Studio 7 our experienced team will advise you on the correct session lengths and frequency, dependent on your skin type and your current stage of tan development, producing a tanning program that is right for you.

Don't sunbeds emit UV levels up to 15 times stronger than the sun?

No, under British and EU regulations, all sunbeds are required to have a maximum UV output of 0.3W/m2, which is equivalent to the midday Mediterranean summer sun.

The 0.3 standard is reached by all modern sunbeds using regulated tubes, such as the combination of hybrid tubes used at Studio 7 tanning rooms.

Therefore 9 minutes on a Studio 7 sunbed is the same as 9 minutes in the Mediterranean sun but without the risk of burning.
